  • Which material is best for a new window?

Opting for high-performance materials, such as aluminium and uPVC (both of which can be double or triple glazed), will guarantee your home is a warmer, quieter and more comfortable place to live.

  • How does double-glazing work?

The Energy Saving Trust says ‘Double glazing works by trapping air between two panes of glass creating an insulating barrier that reduces heat loss, noise and condensation’

With energy bills constantly on the rise, taking steps to improve the insulation of your home will lower how much you spend on heating it. Whether you’re upgrading single glazed windows or replacing your existing double glazing, energy rated uPVC and aluminium windows can help improve the energy efficiency of your home and save you money on your energy bills.

  • What are the regulations for replacement glazing?

The regulations apply to thermal performance, safety, air supply, means of escape and ventilation.

When work has been completed by a registered installer, you will receive a certificate which shows that the new windows and/or doors meet these standards.
If you sell your home, you’ll need to produce this certification. Not having it could result in added expense and delay.

  • What is a competent persons scheme?

Competent persons schemes were introduced by the government as an alternative to submitting a building notice or using a local authority inspector.

If you use an installer registered under a competent persons scheme, the work doesn’t need to be submitted to your local authority for building regulation control and you won’t have to pay for it to be inspected. The scheme certifies that the work complies with building regulations.
